Fifty years after the war on poverty highlighted need in Appalachia, @walkyourcamera set out to dispel stereotypes and redefine how the region was portrayed in photographs. His project, @lookingatappalachia, includes photos by @scenicline — who shot this image last year in Dunkirk, New York — and more than 90 other professional and amateur photographers. @walkyourcamera started with a callout on @Instagram asking for images that reflect the 13-state region today. “If I wanted to show the diversity of the region, that would be hard to do as a lone photographer,” he told our photo blog, Lens. “I would just be constructing new visual stereotypes if I did it by myself. It made sense to open it up since there are far better photographers and the story being told is more than just mine.” #lookingatappalachia #lensblog
