Emil Jannings became the first person to be presented with an Academy Award statuette in a slightly unusual way. He earned his award in 1929 as best actor for his performances in “The Last Command” (1928) and “The Way of All Flesh” (1927). But he received his award prior to the very first Academy ceremony on May 16, 1929. Why did he get his statuette early? Jannings, you see, left Hollywood at the end of April to return to his home in Germany. Unlike today when the winners are announced the night of the Oscars, back then, the winners in the 1st Awards were announced on February 17, 1929. To accommodate Jannings, he was presented with his award before he left Hollywood on April 27. He sailed from New York on May 4, and it was mentioned at the ceremony that he had arrived back in Germany earlier that day, with his statuette. Thus if anyone asks you who was the first person to be presented with an Academy Award, you can confidently say Emil Jannings, who, you can add, was also the first person to bring his statuette to Europe.
