Pim and her son on Klong Prao beach. I decided to take a walk toward the water as sunset was quickly approaching. The purple, orange, and blue light was some of the best we'd had all week and the view over the Thailand Gulf was becoming even more spectacular. After about 15 minutes of walking, I was flagged down by a group of enthusiastic Cambodian men and women, all of whom were barbecuing (and offering) pork and vegetables, among a plethora of cold beer and cigarettes.
The generosity they graciously display is something you hear of through seasoned backpackers abroad—their kindness and lighthearted attitude is one that is hard to be rivaled with. After speaking with them, we learned they endured a long series of bus rides from Cambodia, for one sacred day to spend beachside, sharing laughs, drinks, food, and friends. They relentlessly feed you, refill your cup, and light your cigarettes, refusing any and all things in return.
Backpacking provides many moments of perspective but it's times like these that provide a simple reminder that we are eternally lucky and privileged to share such simple experiences with people of all different backgrounds.
