The secret behind the photo on page 218 of #lifelovebeauty : 5 years ago my mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. When she would go for hours to get her chemotherapy and radiation I would visit this fountain near the treatment ward. It always had people standing near or around it making heavy wishes and placing them on the wings of pennies, nickels, dimes etc... The people whispering their wishes ranged from parents for their children or themselves, or friends/family of patients, or children for their parents or for themselves. Pinching coins so hard they could almost break. The kids in treatment would make reference to the fountain as "a place to wish on your own stars" I thought it was a beautiful metaphor but I didn't truly understand how literal it was... I visited this fountain a little later one day, just as the California sun was setting with a vermilion glow. It ignited the windows and bounced light directly into the fountain shallows. The coins illuminated like stars and suddenly the fingers that smelled like metal were the same fingers that created private stars holding the deepest wishes. All this sitting silently beneath five inches of water. It's a photo into the reflection. Standing over the water and peering past the plain of sight- not only could you make out palm trees but you could see the sky...and placed in the sky were all the wishes. If only for a time.
