2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee #PaulButterfield passed away on this day in 1987. “Butterfield was a seminal figure in the white-blues scene that sprang up in the late Fifties near the University of Chicago. He learned blues harmonica and vocals as a teenager, jamming with Muddy Waters and Little Walter in ghetto bars. He was crucial in spreading the word about black acts and bringing their plugged-in blues to the rock world. In 1965, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band – featuring crack guitarists Elvin Bishop and the late Michael Bloomfield – was the first electric group invited to play the Newport Folk Festival. Following its set, the band backed Bob Dylan for his first-ever electric outing. The audience booed. Butterfield claimed that Pete Seeger even tried to cut their wires. But the event proved a watershed. That same year, the band released its first album, ‘Paul Butterfield Blues Band.’ But it was the second LP, 1966’s 'East-West,' that broke through the black-blues heritage and forged an original sound, fusing elements of jazz, blues, country and Indian music.” From the June 18th, 1987 issue of @Rolling Stone
