I was very proud to watch a personal hero and dear friend of mine, George Takei, be celebrated last night in Los Angeles. The Japanese American National Museum held a gala during which he was awarded with a medal of honor for Lifetime Achievement and public service.

Many people know George as Captain Sulu from Star Trek or from his Facebook page, which became a social media phenomenon several years ago. In addition to his notable public persona and esteemed acting career, George is a man with a remarkable past. His family was among the thousands of Japanese Americans who were forced into internment camps by the U.S. Government during World War II shortly after Imperial Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The appalling mistreatment of Japanese-American citizens is often omitted from World War II history lessons, but thanks to people like George and his wonderful husband Brad, it has been brought to the attention of millions of people. George helped turn his story into a powerful musical, "Allegiance," which he calls his legacy project. It makes its Broadway debut this coming fall.

Congratulations, George! You deserve every accolade you receive and it was a privilege to watch you accept this one.
