Dear veterinarians and friends, Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. There also comes a time when silence is a betrayal. Will you please help me stand up for kitties who are being declawed and who have no voice. Let’s not betray them. Veterinarians who declaw cats, will you please sit down and listen. Listen to us as we ask you to simply just educate cat owners on the humane alternatives and warn them of the very negative consequences if they declaw their kitty. Stop declawing and become heroes to the cat people of the world. Use your expensive and high tech lasers to heal and to not maim and inflict pain. Stop using declaws as a means to pay back the bill for those laser machines. Your clients who insist on amputating their kitties toe bones and claws for the sake of their furniture, “sensitive skin”, or “new baby” can be persuaded into the healthy and normal alternatives like scratchers, soft paws, and trimming their nails. These clients trust you with their loved little pet and can be enlightened on facts that make them truly realize that cats need their toe bones and claws for so many reasons and especially for their health and well being. If they insist on going elsewhere then let them. The more veterinarians STOP declawing, the less places those people will have to get it done. Stop saying you do it because your technique is “best.” That’s a weak excuse and what most veterinarians who declaw say. There is no “best” way to amputate a part of a cat’s body for the convenience of someone’s sofa. Take the high and moral ground like all your fellow veterinarians in 28 countries have done. They know it is wrong and mutilation and they are looking at all of you in shame. If you don’t want to do it for the poor kitties then at least do it for yourself. Be a positive part of cat history and do the right thing and stop declawing. Start truly being on the side of kitties . Declawing cats completely goes against the oath you took to heal and help animals.
