Remembering #ZEROnetwork artist Otto Piene on his birthday with his immersive installation "Light Ballet" (1961) on view in "ZERO: Countdown to Tomorrow, 1950s–60s," October 10, 2014–January 7, 2015. Piene was first a painter, and as a painter, he used stencils. From there he began experimenting with projecting light into space. In the words of Piene, "that was really a lot of fun because the light dances through the room on all the walls and all the surfaces.” Eventually, what started with Piene shining a handheld light through stencils, evolved into motorizing perforated sculptures, to create room-scaled environments.
