Lemme put it this way, imagine you're a 13 year old kid. Imagine you make a mistake. Maybe you got caught with pot. Or were just around a friend who was. You could end up in the hole. A 6 x 8 cement box. For 22-24 hours a day. Before you've even been convicted of a crime. Because nearly half the kids that commit suicide are in #solitary when they die, you might not get any possessions, no educational material, even a pencil. Imagine staring at a wall and listening to the screams of your fellow prisoners down the hall and clanging metal doors all night. Imagine surviving without sleep, without human contact, without any natural light, without proper exercise... You were just a kid when you went in. People can be in solitary for months, years...even decades. Do you think you'll emerge rehabilitated, better able to rejoin society? If you locked your kid in a closet you'd go to jail.
