#OnKawara created three large date paintings during the time of the Apollo 11 lunar mission in 1969, known as the “Moon Landing” paintings. They are larger than most of the other paintings; grouped together, they are accompanied by boxes containing newspapers from the dates in question. If the year and month aren’t immediately significant to you, a headline tells the story: “Man Walks on Moon.” On blogs.guggenheim.org, find out why he featured those dates, and how can we look at them within his practice as a whole.
