On this day, 46 years ago, Afeni Shakur was arrested with 20 other Black Panthers--known as the Panther 21--in a pre-drawn raid by the government. Afeni was largely responsible for defeating the prosecution's case, despite objections from her codefendants. The Panther 21 were eventually acquitted of their charges in 1971, but not before Afeni spent time in jail while pregnant with Tupac. "First of all, know that at this time, 1969, 1970, this NY21 trial was the longest trial in the state's history. The pretrial hearing didn't begin until February 2nd, ten months after we were arrested. Second, State Supreme Court Judge John Murtagh hated pretrial hearings for an indefinite period of time. This had never been done before, and after I think four weeks of this delay, a letter was written to Judge Murtagh from the Panthers demanding a fair trial. I got out on January 31, 1970. Trial began in February. I got pregnant while I was out on bail. I never thought that I wasn't going to spend the rest of my life in jail. I was never getting out and that's why I wanted to have this baby. Because I wanted to leave something here. I was going to jail for 312 years. That's what I was facing." - Afeni Shakur
