Tech Tip Tuesday: Long exposures at dusk and even into the night are some of my favorites as long as they feel believable and authentic. The balance between the natural light (the moon, the sunset, or the northern lights) and the light from a headlamp or strobe take some experimenting and experience to perfect. But it's this glimpse beyond what the eye can see that's so exciting...•

Capturing this shot last week in Iceland of an ice climber inside an iceberg with the Northern lights in the background was no exception. •

My first step is to set up my composition on a tripod. These are usually 1-4 second exposures so this is essential. Next I test exposures to find the right exposure for my background (usually I like this to be a bit darker than my subject). The last step is to introduce the subject and find the proper power/exposure on the flash or headlamp so that they are not significantly over exposed compared to the background. That's all there is to it -- now get after it...! #techtiptuesday
