Four years ago, Free the Children opened up Kisaruni, its first ever all girls school in the Maasai Mara. One of the first schools in the Mara where girls from different tribes worked and studied side by side. They found girls who were most in need of education. This past December I was fortunate enough to attend their first ever graduation. The girls had just sat their national exams and those results alone would determine whether on not they would be accepted into University. We were asked to not talk to the girls about their exams since the pressure was so immense and this was the school's first time ever taking them. Instead we spent time with these girls, who four years ago only spoke in barely audible whispers, chatting up a storm about their families and celebrating the great accomplishment of graduating.
Today I woke up to this email and have been in tears since. Let this show that we must invest in our girls. Education is the key to irreversible empowerment. The Kisaruni girls are now a shining historical example of that. I couldn't be more proud and more happy than I am today.
