His forbidding appearance — tight black cloths ('It suits the Clint Eastwood in me'), high forehead topped by dyed-black hair, solitary hoop earrings — conceals a gentle, if paranoid, soul. 'I feel very safe in cars,' he says, reiterating the theme of his hit 45. 'You can lock the doors and they can't get to you. I don't like people gettin' to me. Bein' in a car keeps me safe. It's a cocoon.'... As for his career plans, he's already had enough of the music industry — 'It's a big disillusionment,' he says — and plans to retire from music in a few years to run an airplane business (Numan is a pilot) or get involved in video production."
