Today marks the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when peaceful voting rights marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Al. only to be brutally beaten by policemen on the other side. President Barack Obama spoke at the anniversary event in Selma and crossed the bridge in an act of commemoration. "What could be more American than what happened in this place?" Obama asked the audience. But he added that "this nation's racial history still casts its long shadow upon us." Pictured here, First Lady Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, and Rep. John Lewis, who was one of the marchers in Selma 50 years ago, stand to commemorate the historical civil rights march. Photograph by Jonathan Ernst—@reuters. For full Selma coverage visit time.com
