50 years ago today, 600 civil rights marchers assembled in #Selma to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River en route to Montgomery. Just short of the bridge Alabama State troopers and local police ordered them to turn around. When the protesters refused, the officers shot teargas and waded into the crowd, beating the nonviolent protesters with billy clubs and ultimately hospitalizing over 50 people. Martin Luther King Jr. (Pictured) called for civil rights supporters to come to Selma for a second march.Televised images of the brutal attack presented Americans with horrifying images of marchers left bloodied and roused support for the Selma Voting Rights Campaign.
