When I tell stories of how professional he was, many are surprised because the public image seems to be contrary to that reality. He was the only subject that I ever had to send home in my entire career due to equipment malfunction. Imagine telling a superstar of that magnitude that you have to cancel the shoot and then we have to figure out if we can reschedule for the next day. Luckily, he was staying in Atlanta so his reaction was a simple one: ‘No problem, Chi. I’ll see you tomorrow, same time!‘ The next day he returned, we did the session that produced that classic profile image of him fixing his bandanna while smoking a cigarette. That’s the backstory to that picture and shows another side of the man that few got see.
