We all have cameras with us now, it's something we take for granted. It's so easy to just capture anything, that I can forget about letting the photo capture me. There is a difference between a picture and a photograph. To me, a picture is something of pure aesthetic appeal, nothing more, nothing less. It's pretty.
There's no problem with this, it still has the power to pull emotion. And this, to me, should always be one of the goals of photography. A photograph goes deeper however. It interacts with the viewer beyond aesthetics, questioning the relationship between viewer and what is being viewed. A photograph is, intrinsically, a story condensed into a frame.

This is one of the first photographs I took after I decided to start pulling around a camera. Every once and a while I return to it, to remind myself to try and capture photos of a similar quality. Now I can look back upon it and say 'oh the framing is a bit off,' or 'should have corrected the depth of field,' but I still enjoy it. I never did find out whose birthday it was.
