FEB 13: FAIRNESS Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. - Matthew 5:44-48(NIV) Why should I love my enemy? He's my enemy! Why should the warm sun and cooling raining fall equally on me, the righteous, and on that guy, who is clearly unrighteous? Why should I greet in love those whose beliefs, whose core values, are so radically different from mine? And how on earth can I be perfect? Perfect, like God? These are perhaps the most radically unfair verses in scripture, matching up perfectly with our radically unfair days. God is not a payroll clerk, providing grace and condemnation, sun and rain, in proportion to our good or evil works. It's a whole different calculation entirely. Our days require us to strive to be like Jesus, nothing more, nothing less. When we accept that his love is sufficiently abundant for us and all the other underserving beings who walk this earth, we will stop seeking fairness and instead simply accept His grace and desire it for others. Dear God, help me shift from a wordily calculus to a godly one. I do not deserve the grace you extended to me. As I strive to live like you, let me extend grace to others who are also underserving. Amen

FEB 13: FAIRNESS

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you
may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise
on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the
unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you
get? Are not even the tax collectors doing more than others? Do not
even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father
is perfect. - Matthew 5:44-48(NIV)

Why should I love my enemy? He's my enemy! Why should the warm sun
and cooling raining fall equally on me, the righteous, and on that guy,
who is clearly unrighteous? Why should I greet in love those whose beliefs,
whose core values, are so radically different from mine? And how on earth
can I be perfect? Perfect, like God?
