The emergence of dark skin in human beings may have come from an interesting source. Some studies have suggested that environmental pressures selecting for lower incidence of skin cancer may have resulted in overall much darker skin colors.

This theory emerged from a study of albino individuals from primarily dark-skinned populations in sub-Saharan Africa. This theory was widely dismissed, but the facts remain even as they can only correlate. Albino people are much more likely to contract skin cancer than other populations because of their complete lack of melanin. In contrast, white populations with normal melanin levels have a 3.4 sun protection factor, and darker-skinned to black populations go up to a 13.4 skin protection factor. Albino populations are highly susceptible to skin cancer, up to 1000 times more likely in some populations. While the studies can't conclude that dark skin was a response to protection from the sun, the studies present facts that strongly suggest it.
