Despite being illegal in many countries, each year some 3 million girls undergo female genital mutilation, a practice that poses life-threatening dangers and leaves devastating emotional wounds. FGM continues due to cultural pressures, and is often performed by trained medical providers, but has no place in medicine and will NEVER be safe.
