I learned to fade differently than most... I never used guidelines and guards until very recently. We were taught to do everything down to as short as possible shear over comb and then you used a freehand technique to blend from the skin to the shear over comb with an adjustable clipper. I want to always explore what I'm least comfortable with so I've been doing much more with guards and hard guidelines to see how my results differ. top left is before, top right is with the hard guidelines and the bottom is finished product... it's not as smooth as I'd like and I think the lines need more roundness for Chad's head shape. the difference I see is that the other way has a softer look to it and this format creates a very crisp edge to things... one is not better than the other. It's about choosing the right tool and technique for the result you envision. @andrew.carruthers
