I was just reading through some of the comments from this "Fox & Friends" repost of the presidents speech this past Friday. He accurately spoke about how religion can be distorted to justify hateful crimes against humanity. And how this twisted interpretation is far from unique to Islam. He reminded us that some pretty evil and unspeakable acts historically have been carried out in the name of Christianity(and quite a few are still happening today!!!) Quite an inconvenient truth for the far right...but an undeniable truth none the less. The reactions were fascinating to me. "Obama is a disgrace" "Clint Eastwood was right...he's just an empty chair" "Obama is a Muslim" (as if being a Muslim is a crime). Wow...all I can say is Hatred loves the ignorant...and ignorance hates the truth. The comments would be funny if the fact that most Americans agree with them wasn't the case. How can we move towards a brighter future if we can so easily forget our dark past? (Or present!!) A lot of the angry Fox nFriends fans got especially frantic when Obama referenced the crusades. "That was hundreds of years ago!" Well Jim Crow was little more than a generation ago, and Mosques (and other religious places of worship) all over the good ol' USA are being threatened and attacked today(daily!!) by Christian extremists. The truth hurts and hearing it is extraordinarily painful for the self righteous. I wanted to laugh but I couldn't. Bottom line is...PLEASE stop defining Islam or any other religion by a subset of crazy psychopathic assholes on a mission. This 21st century global community might actually have a shot at still being here in the 22nd if we stop making such effe'd up detrimental categorizations. Oh...and also if we can finally stop categorizing FOX as "news".
