SENIOR SUNDAY! We love sharing senior success stories with you from our friends at @susiesseniordogs. Start your morning off right with Rolo! "Hi! In 2006, me and my [now] husband went to the City of Boston Animal Control and asked about their older dogs. Rolo had been picked up by animal control in a parking lot behind an urban Burger King and had sat in a cell for 4 months while all the other dogs came and went. No one wanted to adopt a 10-12 year old dog with one wonky eye (turns out Rolo is lacking a tear gland in one eye and so has permanent dry eye on that side as well as scarring from many opportunistic infections). But we said 'yes' immediately! We also took the little dog in the cell next to his, a funny-looking little terrier/dachshund mutt, 3-4 year old, who had been brought in after his elderly owner passed away. Eight and a half years later, our boys are still doing great. Rolo has defied all odds and each year we are forced to re-examine the age estimate given to him at the shelter. However, our wonderful vet agrees that if he is not indeed 20 years old, he must be within spitting distance of that milestone. Rolo's big presence is tempered by a sweetness that endears him to everyone who meets him. Rolo knows lots of tricks as he is very food-motivated, and he's a very smart dog--TOO smart, sometimes! Once he broke into the dog food by pawing open a lower cabinet door, sneaking around the inside of the cabinet to the food bin, and eating almost 4 lbs of kibble (!!!). Rolo has given us so many stories over the years. We were proud to throw him a '20th Birthday BBQ' last August and he really rose to the occasion. If any dog's story can help encourage others to take the chance on a senior dog, I believe it's Rolo's story. Rolo has seen us through incredible ups and downs: getting engaged and then married, buying a first house, the death of a parent, new jobs, new careers, family drama on all sides.
