I grew up thinking looks didn’t matter. Mostly this is because of my wonderful mother. She did not shave her legs, or dye her hair, or wear makeup. She never told me, or anyone, that they looked beautiful. We got other kinds of compliments instead, about working hard or good behavior. For a while my mother protected me from the reality that our culture objectifies girls and women. But the other reason that I didn’t have to think about beauty was because I was privileged to fit oppressive Western standards: white, skinny, youthful & etc. The other day my 11-year-old cousin commented on a rude Instagram post she came across, “Why would you say anyone is more beautiful that anyone else? That’s mean.” And of course it is.
