Throwback Thursday
A photo from a #LandonLecture series at #KansasStateUniversity in 1985 I was a stringer working for #PeteLeabo from the #AssociatedPress. Former Salvadorian president #JoseNapoleonDurate waves good bye as he leave the K-States campus. The #Salvadoran political figure was mayor of San Salvador before being elected president of #ElSalvador in 1972. He was re-elected as civilian President of #ElSalvador in 1984, defeating ARENA party leader D'Aubuisson. He served as president until 1989. His military regime is noted for large-scale human rights abuses and massacres amongst the civilian population and was supported by the Reagan Administration and the Central Intelligence Agency.
You can see his fingers that he lost while being tortured after a failed coup d’etat in March 1972.
He was condemned to death for high treason, but international pressure forced Molina to grant him exile, which he obtained in Venezuela. In 1974, he returned to El Salvador, where he was promptly arrested and returned to Venezuela.
