#CaptainBeefheart would have been 74 this week. “I would have to say Captain Beefheart was my favorite guy to work with because he was a freethinker, not afraid to take chances. He was an artist. Derek Taylor, the former Beatles publicist, sent him to me. For the second album they came to my studio at A&M. Don was dressed in a suit and tie, looking very sharp. He told me the album was called ‘Strictly Personal.’ So I shot a headshot of him. He then asked me to shoot them straight to make postage-size stamps out of them. He also wanted me to shoot them in costume, as they called themselves the 25th Century Quakers. He informed me that the band comes out and plays the blues in masks and that the audience thinks they’re getting two groups. I had never heard of that. It was so brilliant. He was a conceptual artist. We related to each other and he trusted me.” From ‘Big Shots’ by photographer @GuyWebsterphotography
