TECH TIP TUESDAY:
This probably doesn’t come as a surprise, but my favorite photographs are images of athletes doing their thing in epic landscapes. There is just something about man interacting with nature that I love — and honestly the biggest critique I give to new photographers (when they ask for it) is, “you captured the action great… but the image needs a sense of place,”. That’s what this Tech Tip Tuesday is all about :

I don’t care if I have to climb trees, dive under water, or hike an extra two hours up a hill to get out of the jungle (like we did here) — capturing the place is as important as the action. To get this image of @ザ・ノースフェイス athlete Kami Semick running near #MtFuji #Japan, we hiked for hours to get to the summit of a hill that I hoped would have a view of Mt. Fuji. When we finally got towards the top we found ourselves below the giant leaves of a bamboo forest, and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t capture both her and the mountain behind… The solution? I attached my camera to a monopod and extended it so that the camera was about 15’ above the ground. I prefocused, exposed, and ’sprayed and prayed’ using a #pocketwizard transmitter as she ran by. From this elevated perspective (and with the help of a fisheye lens) I got the shot of Kami, and Mt Fuji. Awesome athlete in epic location!
