“The #Beatles arrived in San Francisco for what turned out to be the group’s final scheduled public performance August 29th at Candlestick Park. The Beatles jetted into town and out, spending a total of five hours on the ground. Backstage, the Beatles mingled with Ralph Gleason and #JoanBaez. @JimMarshallPhoto had photographed Baez since the Newport Folk Festival and her face was one of the great loves of his camera for the rest of his life. Marshall shows even #PaulMcCartney captured by the luminous beauty of the young Baez. When the groundskeeper announced that he would not allow the band to be transported to the stage across his freshly mowed field in an armoured truck, DJ Tom Donahue told him, “Okay, you can go out there and tell those people there’s not going to be a show.” The band whisked through 11 songs in about half an hour, climbed aboard the armored car, and was in their jet flying out of town.” –From ‘The Haight: Love, Rock, and Revolution’ by Joel Selvin, photos by Jim Marshall. © Jim Marshall Photography #paulisdoodling
