Happy #InternationalCheetahDay! The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world, with a slim muscular build made for intense bursts of speed. They can accelerate to 60 mph in three seconds! Biologist Adrienne Crosier at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute is the newly appointed Species Survival Plan coordinator for cheetahs (we're so proud of Adrienne!). Cheetahs at SCBI and other AZA accredited zoos receive breeding recommendations based on the best genetic matches. But successful breeding starts long before a male and female ever meet. Twenty-two surviving cheetah cubs have been born at SCBI since 2010. Each birth is a huge boost for cheetah conservation. Cheetahs are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Animals due to habitat loss, approximately 12,000 cheetahs live in sub-Sahara Africa. #WeSaveSpecies
