With tears streaming down his face, 12-year-old Devonte Hart and #Portland police Sgt. Bret Barnum embraced in the middle of a #Ferguson-related demonstration Tuesday.

Devonte's mother described the moment in a Facebook post. Her son had been holding a sign offering "Free Hugs" when Sgt. Barnum approached and asked why he was crying. "His response [was] about his concerns regarding the level of police brutality towards young black kids," Hart wrote. "Yes. *sigh* I know. I'm sorry. I'm sorry," Sgt. Barnum responded, and then asked for a hug.
