This is my four-legged brother, Daisuke, who was born in a puppy mill. He has so many fear and anxiety issues, my family stopped having visitors at the house. My mom boarded him prior to my arrival but I asked her to bring him home. Despite her concerns, Daisuke sniffed me, took treats out of my hand and jumped on my lap within a few seconds. My mom kept saying it was because I was a trainer. I told her no, but it was simply because of the respect I gave him. I never stick my hand out to let dogs sniff me, which many people do. I had a piece of treat hidden in case he decided he was comfortable with me. But most importantly, I got down on his eye level and faced away from him, so not to scare him. Just imagine meeting a giant bear on the street and he tries to pet you on your head, but you are restrained by a leash?
When I was invited to #betterwithpets in NYC by @purina, I got to listen to Victoria Stilwell again and she was a music to my ears. Her demo about dogs walking on four legs next to humans on two legs was incredible. She said that when we ask our dog to heel, it was like asking him to walk slow motion. Dog training has changed over the last decade. It is no longer about "making dogs do things because they are dogs", it is more about mutual respect and understanding! #letsbekindtoanimals
