Our U.S. military men and women sacrifice themselves and their families to serve our country. Because of their courageous commitment, we are able to experience all sorts of freedoms (even the freedom to complain). Yet many of them may never be heard, seen or recognized for their heroism.

I think it's crazy that as professional athletes, we are often put on a pedestal because of a game we play. Meanwhile, our unsung, fellow citizens risk their lives in some of the world’s most dangerous situations and places for our freedom. We get to enjoy the fruit of sometimes selfish successes while they face unimaginable difficulties daily.
I just could not allow this day to speed by without utilizing this platform to direct attention towards the true heroes. I share this with you because my father has served in the Air Force, and I have two uncles who served (one in the Army, one in the Navy), along with several cousins and other close friends.

They have fought, and others continue to fight today, for the freedoms of every individual. They miss holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and child-births while their fellow Americans live in relative peace and go about their daily routines.

I respect their bravery and willingness to make their lives secondary to serving as gatekeepers and protectors of our way of life. Yes, I too would likely forget how precious air was to breathe until I was somehow deprived of it.

May we be forever grateful for our military men and women!
