Just three months after Stan made his major league debut in 1941, the United States was thrust into World War II. Due to the large supply of single men of military age in his hometown of Donora, he didn’t get drafted into the service until January, 1945. Stan chose the Navy and was assigned to Special Services, spending most of his time in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor playing baseball as entertainment for the troops. With service personnel wanting to see the long ball, he adjusted his batting stance to hit more homeruns—a skill that would serve him well upon his return to the Cardinals after he was honorably discharged in March, 1946. #CardsArchives
