Happy Birthday, Gunnery Sgt. Basilone!

Today marks what would be Basilone's 98th birthday. We celebrate the heroism and valor this Marine displayed during the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross in World War II.
Basilone served two years in the @usarmy before joining the Marine Corps in 1940. He would go on to whoop ass like it was his favorite pastime. Actually, whooping ass was his favorite pastime. Basilone was a champion boxer in the Philippines before the Corps and for the rest of his short life, he would be known as “Manila John.” Semper Fidelis, Manilla John!
