Good morning from Shanghai! Can you believe it's already time for another weekly installment of my #SundayStories series!? Each week I'm sharing fun stories from my 10 years modeling. Once you establish yourself in high fashion runway work, you start traveling with the same crew of international teenage models for the entirety of fashion month, twice a year, every year. Most of the girls are in their mid to late teens and for the most part are a little on edge because A) they’re literally exhausted from non-stop travel between fashion capitals and B) they are stuck together, wether they like it or not, nearly 24 hours a day for weeks on end. It’s like a never ending high school sleepover with some girls you like and some girls you fear. I remember backstage one day in Milan, an especially bubbly English-speaking model had probably had one too many coffees and was bouncing around as she normally did. She accidentally bumped, full force, into an eastern European model who had about enough with the English girl. "You're always messing around!! What's wrong with you!?" she barked. Then, all of a sudden, backstage turned into West Side Story, only with everyone in hair rollers and half-done makeup. The other eastern European models jumped out of their chairs to back up their girl, and then the English-speaking girls made a circle around them. The stage was set for an all out "Beat it" style brawl. Luckily my grandparents were both Ukrainian and Irish so I was one of the few neutral "Switzerland" models, smiling, with no idea what to do. Fortunately the backstage didn't turn into an all out zoolander fight, but later on the runway the eastern European girl intentionally bashed into the English girl, throwing her off balance and into the side. Embarrassed, the English model teared up and everyone was pretty tense for the rest of the season. We’re all in our mid to late 20's and good friends now, but I so wish we’d had our own video cameras backstage back then!
