The star ✨ of our ZERO exhibition—Otto Piene's "Light Ballet" 1961-69. Piene was drafted into the German military at age fifteen, and served in the antiaircraft youth corps for a year during World War II. His experience of the night sky being lit up by the intensive aerial campaign contributed to his later artistic interest in using light as a medium and darkness as a backdrop. Human engagement was a fundamental aspect of the work for Piene, who hoped his Light Ballets would encourage “action, reaction, involvement and participation.” #ZEROnetwork
