On this date in 1934 St. Louis hurler Dizzy Dean fanned two Cincinnati batters with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and got the last man to foul out to gain his 30th victory of the season 9-0. It was the first time a National Leaguer turned the trick since Grover Cleveland Alexander won 30 in 1917 for the Phillies. It was also Dean’s seventh shutout of the season, the first year he won more than 20 games, and a pennant-clinching final game before 35,274 St. Louis partisans. #CardsArchives
