American Museum of Natural History (@amnh) Lonesome George lives again, through the beauty and magic of #Taxidermy. Today he is being revealed at the @amnh for the first time, after a long and difficult preservation project at the skilled hands @georgedante from Wildlife ph. Lonesome George was the last of the Pinta tortoises. The lineage of 'chelonoidis nigra abindonii' came to an end in June 2012, when Lonesome George was found dead in his pen by caretaker #FaustoLlerena. After two failed attempts in 2010 and 2011 to preserve the species from clutches when George mated with two females from a genetically close subspecies 'chelonoidis nigra becki', his chances of preserving his subspecies seemed slim. With him dies the last of the Pinta tortoises, residents of the Galapágos islands that incepted #CharlesDarwin's recognition of #variation in species, eventually leading him to outline his theory of #evolution via #naturalselection . Lonesome George's death is a call to recognize the rate of extinction in the wild, the last of a species marking the last of a legacy, the death of an exotic and beautiful lineage that will never be seen again. Thanks to generous grants from the @amnh and the @savegalapagos , his image will live on in the form of carefully recreated #taxidermy to be kept and displayed at the @amnh in NYC until January 4th, 2015 @robertclarkphoto @instituteartist @thephotosociety @natgeo
