While my birthday is tomorrow, since 9-11, 2001, it's pretty hard to enjoy. This year, what I'm choosing to reflect on about that awful day when the towers came down, is not the destruction nor excrutiating pain we still endure from the loss, nor the majesty of the new Freedom Tower, but the attitude of NY'ers in the aftermath. Everyone you passed on the street had pain in their eyes and wanted to help. It takes a catastrophic tragedy to get to that soul level. But here on this medium, Instagram, we can remind ourselves of what people have lived through; maybe holding on to impulsive opinions and negative words just today out of respect is a healthy practice.
So, in this city that birthed @defjamrecords in 1984, where my home away from home @charliebirdnyc_ thrives, where my husband's dreams to be a stand up comedian came true, where my friends are killing it everyday to afford to live here and make their own dreams real, I want to hope we can remember our humanity. The kindness we felt towards strangers, the resilience, and the tenacity that is the soul of NYC shone bright. My nonprofit, @loverecycled, took off wildly after 9-11, because it gave people a way to offer help to those in need. While there are no silver linings to that disgusting day, us New Yorkers and our dreams have only become better and stronger as a result. #thankyoutomycrewformybirthdaydinner.
