Fall of 83. 12 yrs old. Family was doing a weekend gig at The Sands in AC (either The Dovells or Johhny Maestro & The BK Bridge were also on bill) Although the 70s/80s were super laxed on rules, AC somehow didn't play that ish. Kids weren't allowed on the main casino floor. Daytime I had free reign of the game rooms (kids ask your parents) but come sundown I had to be within eyesight of my folks----it was only right. Fresh after the Atl murders of 81 & parents were more cautious than ever. So I spent 5 hours in a cramped dressing room trying to make the most of boredom. That 4th floor area was also the dressing room location of the headliners in the main theater (remember we were in the smaller club area) so on a rare occasion id see a Rosemary Clooney or Tom Jones or The Pointer Sisters. But I wasn't the entertainment sponge I was now so I wouldn't watch (boring adult stuff) however this particular night was special. If you sat in the hallway you could hear the entertainment on the PA system. Not a bad way to waste time, Joan Rivers headlined and did 2 Shows. She did "crowd work" (comedian jargon for freestyling talking to audience) so both shows were super unique and funny as hell. Since that time I've seen more comedy shows more than I've seen music shows. Even before Fallon I was a comedy nerd. Recording bits off tv and trying to claim em as my own. But as many shows I've attended NOTHING will compare to that first time I witnessed a comedy show. I've followed her career since (never missed the Fox talk show or her afternoon show early 90s) but it wasn't until I saw that documentary that I realized how much we had in common (artists are insatiable & never think what they do is enough/the constant struggle to be loved and revered) what was just a way to pass the time til my late flight boarded turned to be an incredible education. Man I have not given Joan Rivers enough props. I needed to see that movie so I could still be encouraged not to give up. I vowed next time she came Fallon I'd geek out. Turns out I didn't have to wait that long, she sat next to me on plane. Geek out heaven. Thanks Joan.. #RIPJoanRivers
