I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. Sometimes (often) I think we're not emotionally equipped to deal with this steady flow of news, each new wave of tragedy knocking us down before we've recovered from the last. Sandwiched between the Buzzfeed lists and the Upworthy tearjerkers, there's a ticker tape of life's real-time losses and gains. Ten years ago, I imagine it was the same. (I know it was.) Friends died. People got sick. Jobs were lost, homes were lost, and that guy you met at that party succumbed to depression and took his own life and it was awful. But the news wound its way to you slowly, passed, as it was, through the filter of time. And sometimes it didn't reach you at all. Was that better? I don't know. Was it worse? Either way, I have a hard time with today, stumbling upon life's greatest tragedies in the pauses between posting silly photos of my dog and like-ing ice bucket videos (each of which, I might add, make me sharply miss my grandmother, lost almost thirty years ago to that vicious disease). But maybe, Facebook or not, that's just how it goes...
