Happy 98th birthday to the incomparable Mr. Irving Harper!!! Harper worked as a draftsman for Herman Miller designer Gilbert Rohde in the 1930's and was one of George Nelson's first employees. As design director for the Nelson Office, Harper was responsible for some of the 20th century's most compelling and iconic designs, including the Ball Clock and Marshmallow sofa. He also designed the Herman Miller logo and colored it red. You may ask, why red? And he'll tell you, "Because I like red!" While working on the Chrysler Pavilion for the 1964 World's Fair, he began making paper sculptures in his off hours to relieve stress. Some 50 years and roughly 500 pieces later, almost every surface of his Rye, NY, home is besieged by evidence of his remarkable creativity and skill.
