I was deeply moved and horribly angered to learn about the plight of #Rhinos throughout Africa (and the world) today firsthand. I know this photo is disturbing but there's no two ways about how barbaric it is to dart a Rhino and chop its distinguishing feature from its face with a hacksaw while it's still alive. If it's still moving on the ground they'll chop its spinal cord or bash their heads to stop the animal from moving and sounding an alarm. Most are left to die a painful death over the next few days. #Poachers killed over 1000 of the world's remaining 25,000 rhinos last year (or >4% of the population) and have already killed at least 560 this year alone (and that's not even addressing the 25,000+/- elephants poached in the past year worldwide, an unbelievable figure!). The Asian market sees the tusk as a form of elite social status (due to the extreme prices It brings) and the myth that it's an aphrodisiac won't die especially since they've started mixing Viagra in with the ground remains and organized crime has taken an interest in the business, compounding the lies to drive prices higher. I'll be posting more about how you can get involved and throw your ideas and support behind the men and women who spend and risk their lives protecting these majestic, prehistoric animals to keep them with us a bit longer. Some of these animals, if found quickly enough, can be stabilized and live through the ordeal. Two animals were found dead a few days ago and may have lived had they not been hidden under thick brush by their poachers. More posts to come and details will be in my bio.
