#onassignment for #natgeo magazine: shooting a story on the communal Tulou houses of the Hakka people in southern China. Massive citadels made of rammed earth, in circle, oval, square or rectangle shapes, can be as high as 4 stories and house a hundred families, all of the same clan. Built for protection against hostile neighbors, they were once mistaken for China's missile silos back in the 1950's.
