Happy Mother's Day to the woman who birthed and raised us in Gundelfingen, Germany. The woman who told us we were perfect despite the 'Negerkuss' name-calling and other ignorant bullying we were facing daily. Being a single white mother with two little black babies, she had to endure more than her share of attacks by hateful idiots. But her love for us and her heart of a lioness gave us a healthy sense of self and ultimately laid a solid foundation for Patrick and I to thrive and find our paths in life.
And even though we are thousands of miles apart, her voice rings clear in my head as I try my best to teach my kids the lessons I learned from her.
