#Petra is magnificent. Sitting in an ancient mineral cave I found myself thinking about the people who carved these works of art from stone. Who were they? Were they overwhelmed by the magnitude of the siq the first time they walked through it? What did they think about when the caravans, thousands of camels carrying spices and incense and merchant goods moved to and fro? My guess is they were just like you and me. Men and women who longed for adventure, stability, and better lives for their children. Some things are universal, regardless of time and space. And the people who built this place seem, to me, to have been ahead of their time. They invited coexistence and tolerance. They carved their monuments in styles from many cultures. Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Syrian, and more. To make everyone who found their way to Petra feel welcomed. So that all travelers would recognize, in this far off place, something of home. What a concept. I'm in awe.
