This week's @Lonely Planet fan photo was taken by @matiascamisani in #Varanasi, #India. Known as #Kashi [City of Life] and #Benares at various times in history, it is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities and is regarded as one of #Hinduism's seven holy cities. In the photo, a woman collects water from the #GangesRiver in #Varanasi while performing the morning pooja [offering]. According to Vedic traditions, no ceremony is complete without #Gangajal [holy water]. It is believed that if kept in a copper 'kalash' [bowl], it gives holy vibrations and fights away evil and bad luck.
