One of the greatest moments of my life was seeing Nelson Mandela on his freedom tour at Oakland coliseum in 1990 just after he was released from prison. I had written several poems and songs about Apartheid and was involved in getting my university to divest from South Africa in the 1980's. Although I was in the nosebleed balcony of the stadium and had to look through another person's binoculars to see him, I was moved to tears just to be in his area and hear his gentle commanding voice for the first time. He was a hero to all of us, not only for his struggle for freedom but his willingness to achieve reconciliation for all South Africans black and white alike. Although South Africa has a long way to go in this regard and the credit is deserved by thousands of men and women, Mandela is an example of perseverance in the face of great adversity that all people can relate to know matter what your struggle. His autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, inspired me greatly and is essential reading for people of every nation. I hope his passing helps to shine a new light on the beauty and crises that are part of Africa today. #godblessmandela #hero
