Jordy Smith, surfing on April 27, 2013. That date got any significance? It does if you're South African. It's the day that nation celebrates its first post-Apartheid elections in 1994. And what gives this image its weight, apart from all the immediate elements such as the great bull kelp and Jordy's trajectory, is the board's spray (of Nelson Mandela, the architect of the post-apartheid state) underlined with Jordy's favourite Mandela quote "It always seems impossible until it's done", and the location – Robben Island, seven clicks from Cape Town where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The wave is called Madiba's Left and is around the corner from the max security prison that housed Mandela.
Mandela is dead, long live Mandela.
